September 10 and 17th

I have been reading the book titled Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko.  I just finished it on Thursday September 20.  I will be working on creating my book sell about the book before class on October 1 at Tibbetts.  Also, this book will be the first book on my book list as I work hard to record at least 60 books from various genres.

It's now about how you start.  It's about how you finish.

Reading Log

By this time I have finished Al Capone Does My Shirts and I will be making it my first entry of my book list.  Also included in the list of books that I have read and will be adding to my book list include a number of poetry books that I enjoy.  The book titles include Falling Up, It's Valentine's Day and The New Kid on the Block.  I really enjoyed reading The New Kid on the Block because the poems are so true to life and about things that kids can relate to.  The poetry is cleverly written and very enjoyable.  I am still working hard on choosing new books and reading them to strengthen my experience with a variety of children's books.

Do Work

October 15 and 22

These two weeks I have been working very hard on classwork.  Not only the four classes I am currently taking from UNM San Juan Center, (including another one credit weightlifting class from San Juan College) but another correspondence course that includes a lot of work.  But, I have still been able to sneak in a little reading so that I don't fall so far behind that I can't catch up.  I recently added two biograhy's, two folktales, two historical fictions and one picture book.  The book that I enjoyed the most was the picture book titled Wolf!

This book is a funny read about a hungry wolf in search of food.  He happens upon some barn animals who are sitting around reading books.  They totally ignore the wolf even though he intends to eat them for a snack.  He decides that he must learn to read in order to fit in with these animals.  He starts by going to school, but he isn't a good enough reader after the first few classes.  So he practices and practices until he can read very well.  By the end, he reads a book to the animals fluently and they all love to have him around.  They even suggest that he travel around the world with them and read books to people.  They do a very good job diverting his attention from hunger to wanting to belong.  I am positive that they couldn't read and only pretended to so that he would feel out of place and lose his appetite for farm animals (althought that is purely my contention and it is mentioned nowhere in the book).  I also enjoyed the book because of the emphasis that it puts on practicing reading in order to get better at reading.  The best way to improve at something is to do it.  I will continue to buckle down and read so that I can do it for enjoyment and not have to cram.

October 28, Reading Log

I am still reading a lot of books in order to get as many under my belt as possible.  My knowledge of children's literature has increased and I have discovered a few books that I really enjoy reading.  My favorite book that I have read recently is called the age of knights.  I have always been fascinated by knights and this portion of the middle age period.  Knights were always loyal to the king and they were excellent in battle sometimes even heroic, doing things that only knights were capable of.  They were the most prepared men on the battle field during that time and they had a vast array of weapons at their disposal.  Knights were loyal and just figures during that time period who were loved by everyone in their kingdom and hated by everyone else.

The other pair of books that I really enjoyed was The Lord of The Rings series.  They were both exciting and I have always been fascinated by these kind of fantasy books.  In the first book Frodo and Sam are entrusted by the circle of trust to take the ring of power and destroy it in Mordor before the evil king Sauron gets his hands on it again and becomes invincible.  The adventure begins as the Ringwraiths (dead evil kings who are under the power of king Sauron and are hunting Frodo and Sam in hope of recovering the ring) pursue after Frodo and Sam along with their small band of companions.

The second book takes over where the first book left off with Sam and Frondo still on their quest to destroy the ring in the Volcano Mount Doom in the middle of the evil king Sauron's dark kingdom.  Frodo and Sam are joined by Smeagle.  He is a character that has been corrupted by the power of the ring.  His image used to be that of a human (although he was something other than human) but the ring changed his appearance to the ugly beast that he is during the story.  Smeagle has become a slave to the ring.  He has a dual personality.  Smeagel is the good side of him and Gollumm is the other side that desires to have the ring at any cost, even killing the current carriers of the ring Frodo and Sam.  Other wars are going on as an evil Sorcerer Saruman under the control of the evil king Sauron (who once was the owner of the ring and used it to rule over Middle-Earth) is creating his own leagion of evil to fight against all that is still good on Middle-Earth.

November 5th and 12th,

I have been reading quite a bit lately in order to finish my book list on time.  My two favorite books that I have read recently include The Grinch Stole Christmas and Commander Toad and The Big Black HoleThe Grinch Stole Christmas is an excellent tale about a grouchy creature the Grinch who is picked on by all of the Whos in Whoville when he is a little kid because he is different.  So, he becomes grouchy and he flees the area.  He ends up living on a mountain overlooking Whoville.  His whole plan is to steal all of the presents and everything that has to do with Christmas (atleast every material thing).  So, the night before Christmas he steals everything.  But, to his surprise, he wakes up the next morning to carolling.  He decides to return all of the presents and everything else to the Whos.  They include him in the festivities and he lives happily ever after.  He ultimately learns that Christmas doesn't come from a store, it comes from the heart.  This is an excellent true to life tale that describes what being picked on can do to someone in real life.

Commander Toad and The Big Black Hole is a fractured science fiction story.  This new take on the old Star Wars series puts a spin on the things that happen in the Star Wars movies.  Everything has to do with Toads and some of the names are changed.  For example, Commander Toad must save his ship Star Wart from toadel destruction.  This would be a great book to read to younger children and give them a good laugh.

Work Smarter Not Harder

Final Reading Log

Over these past few weeks I have been extremely busy and nothing has changed yet.  So, my booklist has increased in spurts as I tried to read a number of books in order to get the 60 and then hopefully surpass that number and get a few more books under my belt.  My favorite books that I read this particular time around was The Magic School Bus series.  As a child, I used to enjoy reading those books (some of the few that actually drew my attention) and I actually finished some of the books on my own.  A child can learn a lot from a Magic School Bus book because there is a plethora of actual scientific information in them.  Plus, they are attractive books probably because they are written in that short comic book style.

The Magic School Bus Gets Cold Feet, A Book About Warm and Cold Blooded Animals was my favorite of the three that I was able to add to my list.  This book would help a child really cement learning and figure out what the real differences are between warm and cold blooded animals and what those terms mean.  As a child, I really didn't know the difference between these two distinctive categories of animals until I was in high school.  As this book points out, warm blooded animals are able to maintain a constant body temperature.  They do this by using their ability to warm up and cool down and self regulate their own body temperature through metabolic rates.  Cold blooded animals have to resort to different ways of regulating their body temperature other than the ways used by birds and mammals (warm blooded animals which includes humans).  Cold blooded animals are now called ectotherms because they are no longer slaves to their environment and unable to control their body temperatuer as once was believed in science.  Ectotherm is a word that means that their body heat comes from outside of them as from the sun or from flowing water.  Today, most animals aren't either exclusively cold or warm blooded but rather a combination of both somewhere on the continuim between the two.  Plus, the kids can really use their imagination and get into these books because they do take you on an adventure like no other.  The Magic School Bus is a book series like no other and a great tool to use in the classroom to open a discussion like science in a way that would be impossible otherwise.

Book Sell

This book is titled Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko.  The book is about a young boy, Moose Flanagan, and his family who move to the legendary prison on the rock, Alcatraz because Moose’s father gets a job as an electrician on the island.  Living on Alcatraz are some of the man kind’s most hardened and ruthless criminals including the mob’s head man Al Capone and others like Machine Gun Kelly.  These prisoners are so terrible and despicable that other prisons don’t want them.  Furthermore, there are 24 other children (including Moose’s sister) who are also living in the apartments built on the island to house all of the help that a prison of this magnitude would need.  Moose is living on a historical island in a historical period of American history (the great depression).  What kind of trouble will he get into?  What will his life be like on the infamous Alcatraz prison?

Al Capone Does My Shirts is a must read.  Does Al Capone actually wash someone’s shirts?  I mean, this guy is one of the most powerful crime men in America.  His face was scarred because he was slashed in the face with a knife three times as a young man, he was shot in a restaurant, he had his car riddled with bullets on more than one occasion and he had countless attempts on his life.  He was an American gangster and one of the most violent and powerful of his day.  His business made an estimated 10 million dollars per year in revenue (a lot more money at that time than it would be worth today).  Furthermore, he was credited with a number of a number of gruesome murders.  But did he have a human side and could he actually feel compassion?  Would he be able to go from one of the main mobsters to some one who washes clothes and submits to others (a criminals life on Alcatraz)?  You’ll have to read it to find out.
